Growth – the causes of stunted growth (understanding)

Growth – the causes of stunted growth (understanding)

Hear you therefore the parable of the sower. When any one hears the word of the kingdom, and does not understand it, then comes the wicked one, and catches away that which was sown in his heart. This is he which received seed by the way side.  (Matthew 13: 18 – 19)

The goal of the Word of God in you is growth or maturity and the outcome of maturity is fruitfulness. We dealt with that the other day through the use of Isaiah 55:10-11. In the captioned parable, the same principle is expounded by the Lord Jesus Christ. In the below text, he adds to the revelation of Isaiah by showing how the Word of God sown into good ground or a good and ready heart produces fruitfulness to different degrees in different people.

But he that received seed into the good ground is he that hears the word, and understands it; who also bears fruit, and brings forth, some a hundredfold, some sixty, some thirty. (Matthew 13:23)

The objective of a football game is the scoring of goals. However, goals are not always scored. There are always reasons why this is so. Getting to these reasons is what preoccupies part of the time of the numerous football pundits who spend hours on different TV & Radio stations and newspapers analyzing the matches before and after they are played.

In the same way, the goal of the Word of God in you is fruitfulness. You are not always fruitful. Why? The Lord Jesus presents the primary reason: a lack of understanding of the Word released. Understanding is primarily the comprehension of facts and the grasping of truth. Secondarily, it’s knowing how it applies to your life. You have not understood something if you do not know how it is relevant to you. It’s first knowledge, then comes understanding. Once you are exposed to knowledge, ask yourself, How is this relevant to me? What should I do with what I have just learnt?

“Understanding” means: What do I put under my feet to stand on? Feet are symbolic of action, motion and progress. Whatever you understand should get you in motion in the direction of the principle you have heard.

You have not understood if what you have just heard does not get you in motion.
