Growth – Profit that shows

Growth – Profit that shows

Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.  Neglect not the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy, with the laying on of the hands of the presbytery.  Meditate upon these things; give yourself wholly to them; that your profiting may appear to all.  (1 Timothy 4:13-15)

You may not be a show off, but a life that is growing in Christ will show. It will. Yesterday, we dealt with the title, The word is profitable. We spoke about how it is the inherent quality of the word that it is powerfully endowed with ability to cause change in you.

It is the profit or the product of the word of God in you that causes changes. The word of God achieves many things in you. It: Reprimands, Corrects and Instructs you to be and do right in the sight of God! That is the value of the word of God in you. That is its profit.

Now, a profitable word working in you can only produce the profit that it represents. The word will make you a product of its profitability – and it will show. Timothy is advised to pay attention to reading, exhortation and doctrine. It’s not reading novels and magazines. It’s not exhorting or motivating others according to psychological theories. It’s not reading the doctrines of the doctors of psychology either.

The object of our reading, exhortation and doctrines is the Word of God within the pages of the Christian Holy Book, the Bible. From the book of Genesis in the Old Testament and from the gospel of Matthew to the book of Revelation in the New Testament.

Paul tells Timothy that as he does this, the profit of the word would become apparent. This means that the profit, productivity or fruitfulness of the word would show to everyone around him.

You don’t grow in secret. You may learn in secret but your growth will be public.
